SHAH ALAM, Aug 26 — Muslims, particularly those attending mosques and surau, have been advised to take extra precautions to protect their health as air quality deteriorates in several parts of Selangor.
State executive councillor for Islam and innovation Dr Mohammad Fahmi Ngah said those who frequently attend mosques and surau should wear face masks when outdoors and drink plenty of warm water, particularly in areas recording poor air quality.
“I also urge mosque and surau management committees to pay attention to the condition of worshippers, especially children, senior citizens and those with respiratory-related health problems,” he said in a statement today.
Fahmi also advised those experiencing symptoms such as coughing, breathing difficulties or a sore throat, or who feel unwell due to the haze, to reduce outdoor activities, prioritise their health and seek appropriate medical treatment.
“At the same time, congregational prayers at mosques and surau are encouraged to continue, with appropriate preventive measures taken according to local conditions and advice from the authorities.
“Let us continue to enliven mosques and surau with full decorum while taking appropriate measures to protect ourselves, our families and the community during this haze,” he added.
Fahmi’s advice comes as haze conditions remain a concern across several parts of Selangor, with five areas recording unhealthy Air Pollutant Index (API) readings as of 8 am on August 26.
Johan Setia and Shah Alam recorded the highest readings in the state at 158 each, followed by Klang (151), Banting (144) and Petaling Jaya (123).
API readings between 101 and 200 are classified as unhealthy and may pose health risks, particularly to vulnerable groups such as children, senior citizens and those with respiratory problems.
