SHAH ALAM, Aug 25 — The Hulu Selangor Municipal Council (MPHS) seized digital currency (Bitcoin) mining equipment after detecting four premises carrying out the activity without permission or valid licences around Bukit Beruntung.
Its Enforcement Department carried out the integrated operation with Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) yesterday after detecting unusually high electricity consumption at several premises.
“Inspections found that four premises in the Kasturi, Trompet, and Jenjarum commercial areas in Bukit Beruntung were carrying out Bitcoin mining activities without permission or valid licences.
“Seizure action was subsequently taken against the Bitcoin mining equipment at the premises in accordance with the applicable laws and enforcement procedures,” MPHS said in a Facebook post.
The local authority added that such activities could potentially disrupt electricity supply to nearby residents and increase the risk of damage to electrical infrastructure, short circuits, and fires.
“MPHS and TNB emphasise that any activity involving electricity consumption on a large scale must comply with the regulations set, including licensing requirements, business registration, and technical electricity supply conditions.
“Strict action will be taken against any party conducting activities without permission or in violation of the law,” it said.
MPHS also advised premises owners to ensure that their properties were not misused for illegal activities and to comply with all stipulated conditions and regulations.
Members of the public with information regarding unauthorised Bitcoin mining activities or suspicious activities can submit complaints to MPHS or the nearest TNB office for further action.
