SHAH ALAM, Aug 25 — Fraud syndicates are now using artificial intelligence (AI) to clone the voices of family members or people known to victims in order to trick them into handing over money.
The Selangor police contingent headquarters' Commercial Crime Investigation Department (CCID) deputy head ACP Izwan Abd Karim said cases involving scams using voice-cloning technology have already been reported.
“Scammers have started using voice-cloning technology. They can use the voices of siblings, parents, friends or people close to the victim to impersonate them and ask for help,” he said during the 'Bicara Semasa' programme produced by Media Selangor.
Deepfake technology has also been utilised to manipulate faces, allowing scammers to impersonate police officers, bank officials, Inland Revenue Board (LHDN) officers, or representatives of other agencies.
Syndicates can also mimic speech patterns and language styles, using AI to generate phishing messages and scam scripts.
Izwan added that caller ID spoofing techniques could also be used to manipulate a caller’s number so that it appeared to be an official police telephone line.
As such, members of the public are advised to end suspicious calls and verify the matter directly with the relevant agency through its official telephone number.
He emphasised that the police would never ask members of the public to transfer money to personal or third-party accounts for investigation purposes.
