SHAH ALAM, Aug 17 — A 40km fibre-optic network in Cyberjaya, when completed, would allow nearly 90 per cent of data centres in the area to enjoy high-capacity internet connection, said Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari.
He added that the network, developed by SmartSel Sdn Bhd and OCK Datawave Sdn Bhd, will provide data centre managers with access to better network services.
“Cyberjaya is in the network and nearly 90 per cent of data centres in Cyberjaya will be linked to this network, so it would give data centres a chance to connect to our network,” he explained when met after an MOU exchange between SmartSel Sdn Bhd and PG LinkaranFiber Sdn Bhd, as well as the launch of the Cyberjaya Fibreisation Project, here today.
Amirudin said the distance between the existing network and the PG LinkaranFiber infrastructure is only around 20m to 30m, which has eased the connection process.
“With PG Linkaran(Fiber) … for international connectivity or international internet to undersea cables in Singapore, the remaining distance is only 20m to 30m.
“It actually provides more comprehensive connectivity to our future data centre services, especially in Cyberjaya,” he added.
He also said the next fibreisation project will be in Shah Alam — a 288km network to support its smart city needs.
He said that in contrast with Cyberjaya, which prioritises industrial needs, the Shah Alam network would serve homes, schools, government offices, and factory areas.
“In Shah Alam, it will connect everything including homes, schools, government offices and factory areas because these are the requirements for a smart city.
“We will have the first 288km in Shah Alam, but the entire network we have in Selangor will be 889km. This will be done in stages with the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC),” Amirudin added.
