SHAH ALAM, Aug 16 — The state government’s target to build 200,000 Rumah Selangorku units must be supported with fair planning in terms of location, price, and connectivity to ensure these residences truly fulfil the people’s needs, said Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) urban and regional planning/community development lecturer Mohammad Mujaheed Hassan.
He added that the goal reflects the Selangor administration’s commitment to helping residents become homeowners.
“Besides ensuring home prices match the people’s purchasing power, development locations must also be emphasised to ensure owners have access to basic facilities and public services.
“The planning of a city must ensure sufficient accessibility for residents so they not only have homes but may enjoy a good life,” he told Media Selangor.
According to Mujaheed, Rumah Selangorku projects shouldn’t be concentrated in the suburbs, but must also be built in urban areas to avoid communities being segregated by income level.
He said this is important to prevent stigma towards the B40 group and ensure all segments of society enjoy comfortable, quality homes in strategic locations.
He said the target also provides youth with opportunities to own homes at affordable rates, especially as urban property prices remain challenging.
However, he asserted that development quality and sustainability must be emphasised to ensure projects don’t become “ailing” or abandoned.
The state government previously declared a target of building 200,000 affordable Rumah Selangorku Harapan and Idaman units under the Second Selangor Plan (RS-2) by 2030.
Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari said 64,188 units have been built, while 69,014 units are being built, for a total of 133,302 units so far.
