SHAH ALAM, Aug 12 — Menteri Besar Selangor (Incorporation) or MBI will lead the organisation of the opening ceremony of the 2026 Malaysia Games (SUKMA) and Para SUKMA Selangor, which will take place at Dataran Kemerdekaan on Saturday (August 15).
The ceremony will mark the return of the national sporting event to Selangor after 28 years and provide a platform to celebrate the sporting spirit, unity, and excellence of Malaysia’s young athletes.
MBI group chief executive officer Dato' Saipolyazan M Yusop said the trust placed in MBI to lead the opening ceremony was a great honour for Selangor as the host of SUKMA after almost three decades.
“We are honoured to have been entrusted with leading the opening ceremony, which celebrates the athletes' excellence, spirit, and sacrifices.
“Through the cooperation of various parties, we hope this event will not only be a proud experience for all Malaysians, but also leave a lasting legacy for the development of sports, youth, and for the state of Selangor,” he said in a statement today.
With the theme 'This is Where Champions are Born' (Di Sinilah Lahirnya Juara), the opening ceremony will be more than just a symbol marking the opening of the Games; it will showcase the journey of a champion, which begins with dreams, sacrifice, and discipline before achieving success.
The performances have also been designed to incorporate elements of art, culture, music, technology, and visual storytelling to promote the sporting spirit and Malaysian pride.
Among the highlights will be the state contingents’ parade, official opening ceremony, creative performances, the final leg of the SUKMA torch relay, and the lighting of the SUKMA cauldron.
The overall programme has been designed to reflect Selangor’s image as a progressive state while highlighting the spirit of excellence among young athletes.
The opening ceremony will also see strategic cooperation between the public and private sectors through corporate involvement in sports and youth development.
MBI is the organiser, with the Selangor Agricultural Development Corporation serving as the main sponsorship partner.
Supporting the event as platinum sponsors are Pengurusan Air Selangor Sdn Bhd, Worldwide Holdings Berhad, KDEB Waste Management Sdn Bhd, Kumpulan Semesta Sdn Bhd, and Bisabi Sdn Bhd.
Meanwhile, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission, TELEKOM Malaysia Berhad, and Maxis Broadband Sdn Bhd are participating as technology partners through in-kind contributions of goods or services.
The public is invited to attend and enliven the celebrations, which will also feature various activities, including food and beverage sales from food trucks.
The first 500 visitors will receive RM10 vouchers for purchases from the food trucks.
