Beijing on alert as torrential rain threatens widespread flooding

BEIJING, Aug 11 — The densely populated Chinese capital of Beijing braced for more than one-third of its annual rainfall over 24 hours that is expected to start late today, as moisture from Typhoon Dolphin to the south converged with cool air over northern China.

From this evening through Thursday, most areas of Beijing are expected to experience heavy downpours, with cumulative rainfall exceeding 100mm within six hours and 150mm within 24 hours, according to the city's meteorological service.

Cumulative rainfall in districts including Tongzhou, Daxing, Fangshan, Mentougou, Huairou and Fengtai could exceed 200mm within 24 hours.

That compares with Beijing's average annual rainfall of 528mm, the bulk of which falls between June and September.
