SHAH ALAM, Aug 6 — Selangor plans to increase the number of recipients of its Higher Education Institution Study Grant (HPIPT) to 5,000 next year from 3,000 this year.
Menteri Besar Dato' Seri Amirudin Shari said applications for HPIPT in 2025 and 2026 exceeded 5,000 each year, reflecting strong demand and prompting the state government to review the current recipient quota.
“Our findings over the past two years show that more than 5,000 students have applied for university admission each year.
“As such, the state government is assessing whether Selangor's financial position would allow us to increase the number of recipients, possibly to between 5,000 and 6,000.
“We previously provided assistance to 5,000 recipients, and God willing, we hope to restore that number under the Selangor Budget 2027,” he said during the question-and-answer session at the Selangor State Legislative Assembly today.
Amirudin said the state government was also reviewing the HPIPT application period to ensure students have sufficient time to submit their applications after receiving confirmation of admission to higher education institutions.
He said one of the main concerns raised by applicants was the relatively short application period, which had left some students with insufficient time to complete the application process.
“We will look into this so that the application period can be aligned with university admissions and the required verification process,” he said.
Amirudin added that the state government was also considering opening HPIPT applications twice a year to provide greater opportunities for students enrolling during different intake periods.
HPIPT provides a one-off RM1,000 grant to Selangor students pursuing studies at recognised public and private higher education institutions.
The assistance is available to students enrolled in Level 4 Skills Certificate, diploma and bachelor's degree programmes.
