SUNGAI BULOH, Aug 3 — Efforts to develop human capital cannot just be based on academic achievements, but instead supplemented with co-curricular activities that shape students’ discipline, identity and character, said Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari.
He said education cannot be seen as a process that only occurs in classrooms, as co-curricular activities also play an important role in shaping one’s individuality.
“Marching isn’t just a competition, but I believe it is (how one can) shape identities, character, individuality, appearances, and self-definition,” he said when officiating the Dato’ Menteri Besar Selangor 2026 Cup uniformed bodies marching competition closing ceremony.
The competition was held at the Cyber and Electromagnetic Operations Base (MOSEP) Marching Field in Paya Jaras here today.
Amirudin added that training in the run-up to the competition taught participants to obey orders, work in a team, and build perseverance, which are the bases to produce disciplined and resilient people.
He said success in the competition isn’t the main benchmark, instead the bigger picture is to produce individuals who can contribute to the country.
“What’s in front of me (participants) are jewels that must be (polished). We don’t have raw materials sources like oil, like gas, diamonds, gold, or silver. But for me, the gold, silver and jewels are in front of me, which is the future generation,” Amirudin added.
The competition, organised by the Selangor government, Selangor Education Department (JPNS), Gombak District Education Office (PPD), and SMK Ideal Heights gathered around 100 teams and over 6,000 participants.
The event saw 10 categories of competition including primary school uniformed bodies, Tunas Kadet Remaja Sekolah (KRS) teams, KRS squads, non-governmental organisations (NGOs), government agencies.
Klang district emerged overall champion, while Gombak district was named overall runner-up.
