SERDANG, Aug 1 — The Selangor government is proposing a special allocation to enable state residents to purchase tickets to watch the Formula One (F1) Bahrain Gulf Air Grand Prix at the Sepang International Circuit (SIC) this October.
Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari said the proposal is being discussed with the Youth and Sports Ministry (KBS) as an effort to give more Selangor residents the opportunity to experience the race.
“In October, after such a long wait, F1 will return to Sepang, Selangor. God willing, I am in discussions with KBS.
“I would like to provide an allocation for Selangor residents to get tickets to attend the F1 after we have waited for so long,” he said when officiating the 15th Art of Speed Malaysia Festival at the Malaysia Agro Exposition Park Serdang (MAEPS) here today.
On July 26, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said Malaysia is ready to welcome the return of F1 to SIC after a nine-year absence.
The F1 Bahrain Gulf Air Grand Prix is set to take place from October 2 to 4.
Anwar had also said that the government would study the introduction of Madani tickets at lower prices to allow more people to attend the prestigious international race.
The Bahrain GP was originally scheduled to take place at the Bahrain International Circuit in April but was postponed to October due to geopolitical tensions in West Asia.
SIC previously hosted the Malaysia GP from 1999 to 2017 before the race was removed from the F1 calendar due to rising hosting costs and licensing fees.
