‘RS-2 should prioritise youth development, creative economy’

SHAH ALAM, Aug 1 — Youth development and the empowerment of entrepreneurs in the creative economy are among areas that need to be given attention under the Second Selangor Plan (RS-2), which is scheduled to be tabled next week.

State executive councillor for youth, sports and entrepreneurship Mohd Najwan Halimi said the creative economy not only creates new business opportunities but also has the potential to generate more job opportunities, especially for youths.

“As we approach the tabling of RS-2, I hope the state government will place greater emphasis on programmes focused on the development and empowerment of young people.

“We need to further empower our entrepreneurs, especially those directly involved in the creative economy segment,” he told Media Selangor recently.

Najwan said the creative economy has emerged as one of the fastest-growing sectors and is capable of supporting youth participation in the gig economy.

According to him, the entrepreneurship landscape is also changing as more youths are choosing to pursue businesses through more flexible models compared with conventional approaches.

“Today, we see young people becoming more independent. Not all youths are interested in the traditional concept of business, where they need to have a shop and a licence.

“They are more flexible by using social media as a platform,” he said.

Najwan hoped the state government could expand support for emerging entrepreneurs so they can further develop their business potential and capabilities.
