SHAH ALAM, July 28 — The state is on track to become the first in Malaysia to contribute RM500 billion to the national economy, and is expected to achieve the milestone earlier than projected.
Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari said the matter was shared by Deputy Chief Statistician Wan Mohd Shahrulnizam Wan Mohd Najuri during the first meeting of this year’s Selangor Statistics and Data Council today.
“(Shahrulnizam) shared the good news that, based on the state’s current economic performance, Selangor has the potential to achieve its RM500 billion gross domestic product (GDP) target earlier than expected.
“This is a very positive indicator of the strength of the state’s economic fundamentals, as well as investors’ and industry players’ continued confidence in Selangor,” he said in a Facebook post today.
While Amirudin did not provide a specific timeline, in January last year, he said that the state expects to achieve a RM500 billion economy within the next five years, driven by advancements in complex industries such as semiconductors and ventures into artificial intelligence.
Earlier this month, the Malaysian Statistics Department (DOSM) reported that Selangor remained the nation’s largest economic driver in 2025, contributing RM460.1 billion, or 26.5 per cent, to the national GDP.
This represents a 6.3 per cent growth from the RM432.1 billion contribution in 2024, surpassing the national growth rate of 5.2 per cent.
Amirudin added that Shahrulnizam’s presentation confirmed the services and manufacturing sectors continued to be the main drivers of the state’s economy, with a cumulative contribution of 89.3 per cent to Selangor’s GDP, reflecting its strong and resilient economic structure.
“Selangor’s economic outlook also remains positive, supported by a GDP per capita above the national average and continued investment appeal.
“This achievement further strengthens Selangor’s position as the main engine of the country’s economic growth.
“InsyaAllah (God willing), the state government will continue to strengthen a data-driven decision-making culture so that every policy and initiative implemented truly benefits the people, while ensuring that Selangor remains a leading state in the nation’s development and prosperity,” he said.
The Menteri Besar noted that the Selangor Statistics and Data Council serves as an important platform to strengthen the use of data and statistics as the basis for more accurate, effective, and evidence-based planning and policymaking.
Its establishment is an effort to standardise the collection and management of statistical data at the state and district levels.
“Through this coordination, the state government will have access to more comprehensive and accurate data covering social and economic aspects.
“This data is crucial for planning the state’s development policies, including the preparation of the Second Selangor Plan, which will be tabled this August, as well as the preparation of the 2027 Selangor Budget to ensure it is more targeted, effective, and meets the needs of the people,” said Amirudin.
