SHAH ALAM, Aug 11 — Selangor could reach an economic value of RM500 billion ahead of schedule, potentially becoming the first state in Malaysia to achieve the milestone.

Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari said the projection was shared by the Deputy Chief Statistician of Malaysia Wan Mohd Shahrulnizam Wan Mohd Najuri during a presentation on Selangor's economic performance at the end of July.

"InsyaAllah (God willing), it is possible that we will achieve it earlier than targeted. Selangor is set to become the first state in Malaysia to record an economic value exceeding RM500 billion," he said in a Facebook post today.

This achievement reflected Selangor's consistent economic growth over the past several years.

Amirudin said that when he took over the state administration in 2018, Selangor's gross domestic product (GDP) was valued at RM322.6 billion, equivalent to 23.7 per cent of the country's overall economy.

"Last year, that figure increased to RM460.1 billion, or 26.5 per cent of Malaysia's economy. This means that for every RM10 generated by the national economy in 2018, RM2.37 came from Selangor.

"Today, more than a quarter of Malaysia's economy is contributed by Selangor," he said.

Amirudin added that the achievement is more than just a figure, as it reflected the efforts of various groups, including the people, civil servants, entrepreneurs, farmers, and youths, who have driven the state's economic growth.

Selangor's economic foundations have become increasingly robust as a result of successfully realised investments, consistent policy implementation, and investors' continued confidence in the state.

The target of achieving an economic value of RM500 billion was not merely a growth benchmark, but also a catalyst for further developing Selangor into a more prosperous, fair, and inclusive state.

"Our journey is not yet over. InsyaAllah, we will continue to work hard for the people of Selangor," he said.

Last week, the Menteri Besar presented the Second Selangor Plan (RS-2), which outlines six missions across 25 areas and targets an economic value of RM600 billion for the 2026-2030 period.

The state government has also identified five sectors to be prioritised towards 2030: electrical and electronics, aerospace, automotive, the digital economy, and the creative economy.
