Malaysia eyes double lawn bowls gold after tense breakthroughs

GLASGOW, July 28 — Malaysia will have two chances to win lawn bowls gold at the 2026 Glasgow Commonwealth Games after Izzat Shameer Dzulkeple and the women’s pairs team stormed into their respective finals at the Scottish Event Campus (SEC) yesterday.

Izzat Shameer survived a nerve-racking men’s singles semi-final against Australia’s Aaron Wilson, holding his nerve after the match ended 1-1 before clinching the tiebreak 1-0 to book his place in the gold medal match.

Malaysia’s celebrations continued in the women’s pairs event as Aleena Ahmad Nawawi and Syafiqa Haidar Afif Abdul Rahman also came through a dramatic contest to reach the final.

The national duo’s match against Northern Ireland’s Chloe Wilson and Shauna O’Neill ended 1-1 before the Malaysians prevailed 1-0 in the tiebreak.

Izzat Shameer will face England’s Sam Tolchard in the men’s singles final today, while Aleena and Syafiqa will take on England’s Amy Pharaoh and Sian Honnor in the women’s pairs final.

The double success keeps Malaysia firmly in contention for two lawn bowls gold medals and sets the stage for what could be a memorable morning in Glasgow on the greens.
