Foreign Ministry confirms death of Malaysian in South Korea

KUALA LUMPUR, July 27 — The Foreign Ministry (Wisma Putra) has confirmed that a Malaysian citizen died following an incident in South Korea yesterday, while several other Malaysians are involved in an ongoing probe by domestic authorities.

The Malaysian Embassy in Seoul had been in close contact with the deceased's next of kin and the relevant local authorities.

“The embassy was providing the necessary consular assistance to the family, including facilitating documentation, funeral arrangements and the repatriation of the remains to Malaysia,” it said in a statement.

Wisma Putra added that the case is currently under investigation by the South Korean authorities.

“The Embassy will continue to seek verified information from the relevant authorities and will continue to extend the appropriate consular assistance to Malaysians involved, in accordance with the laws and regulations of the Republic of Korea and applicable international obligations,” it said.

Wisma Putra reiterated its commitment to safeguarding the welfare and well-being of Malaysian citizens abroad, while reminding Malaysians residing in or travelling overseas to respect and comply with the laws and regulations of their host countries.

Yesterday, the Korean media reported that a Malaysian national was killed during a group brawl in Eumseong, North Chungcheong province, while another Malaysian was arrested in connection with the fatal incident.
