SHAH ALAM, July 26 — Selangor athletes who win gold will receive between RM2,000 and RM5,000 each if the state emerges overall champion in the Malaysian Games (SUKMA), said Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari.
“For gold medal (wins) in individual to three-member squad events, we have set an incentive of RM10,000, and if we become overall champion, I will raise the rate to RM15,000.
“For groups of four to 10 people, we have set RM7,000 for each individual for gold medal wins, and if we become overall champion, the incentive value will be raised to RM10,000 per person.
“For events involving (squads of) 10 people and above, we have set RM5,000 for gold medal wins or (first-place podium finishes), but if we win as overall champions, we will raise the reward to RM7,000 per person,” he said after a flag handover ceremony for Selangor’s contingent to SUKMA today.
At the launch of the Road to Champion programme in August last year, he said the Selangor government would award a gold medal incentive of RM12,000 (individual athletes to three-member squads), RM7,000 (four- to 10-member squads) and RM5,000 (squads above 10 members) if the state emerges overall SUKMA champion.
Meanwhile, Amirudin said 1,029 athletes and officials will represent Selangor at SUKMA, while 258 athletes and officials will represent the state at Para SUKMA.
SUKMA will be held from August 15 to 24 with 469 events in 37 sports, while Para SUKMA will be held from September 5 to 14 with 316 events in 10 sports.
The opening ceremony will be held at Dataran Kemerdekaan in Shah Alam.
The nation’s biggest sports tournament will see contingents from all states as well as Brunei as a guest.
