SABAK BERNAM, July 26 — Environmental awareness should be instilled in children from a young age to ensure biodiversity and ecological treasures are preserved for future generations, said state executive councillor for local government and tourism Dato’ Ng Suee Lim.
He said the effort is being driven with Sabak Bernam education institutions’ push to foster green practices among kids and boost environmental stewardship across the district.
Ng said environmental conservation is especially important as Sabak Bernam is an agropolitan district and one of Selangor’s main rice producers.
“The objective is to instill green values in everyone in Sabak Bernam. The district has well-preserved biodiversity and ecology, making it one of the important natural treasures in northern Selangor,” he told Media Selangor yesterday after flagging off the Green Healthy Fun Run, at the closing event for Sabak Bernam Green Community at Dataran Tonggak 10 here.
Organised by Politeknik Sultan Idris Shah, the event featured free health screenings, exhibits, Ehsan Rahmah sale, a children’s colouring competition, and the launch of Sabak Bernam’s Merdeka campaign.
Meanwhile, Ng said public participation in sustainability programmes keeps improving, especially among college and secondary school students.
"So far, the response has been increasingly encouraging, with more people taking part especially college and secondary school students.
“They are already aware. As we continue to emphasise (conservation), they will become even more conscious of the importance of protecting the environment,” Ng added.
