SHAH ALAM, Oct 2 — Flood mitigation works at the Selera Jaya 223 food court in Section 51A, Petaling Jaya, popularly known as Medan Selera 223, are underway and expected to be completed within five months to reduce the risk of recurring flash floods.
Petaling Jaya Mayor Datuk Mohd Yazid Sairi was quoted by The Star as saying that the appointed contractor began work on the project on September 14.
“It will take five months from now. We classified the project as one that needed to be carried out urgently.
“We used this year’s allocation to start work and appointed a contractor,” he said, adding that the project is funded through the Petaling Jaya City Council’s (MBPJ) 2026 and 2027 budgets.
Yazir said among the mitigation measures is the construction of an on-site detention (OSD) pond at the carpark next to the food court.
Several other measures have also been identified to address slow drainage, both upstream and at the site.
Previously, it was reported that the food court along Jalan 223 in Section 51A experienced several flash floods this year, including on May 6, when about 60 stalls were submerged under 1.2m of water.
On July 18, the food court was again inundated, as water levels reached up to 2m. MBPJ provided affected traders with a one month rental waiver and a 30 per cent rental discount from July to December and agreed to bear the cost of post flood cleanup.
Yazid said MBPJ would review whether to extend the rental discount, as the mitigation works are expected to be completed only in February next year.
He also assured traders that they would not need to relocate, as the mitigation works would not disrupt business operations at the food court.
