SHAH ALAM, July 21 — Selangor police have seized 247.8kg of cannabis worth an estimated RM19.82 million in six separate operations at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA), dealing a major blow to an international drug trafficking syndicate.
Selangor police chief Datuk Shazeli Kahar said the seizures were made by the Selangor Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department (NCID) following stringent baggage screening conducted with Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) KLIA auxiliary police.
The operations led to the arrest of one local woman, four foreign men, and two foreign women from Europe, East Asia, and Southeast Asia.
“Most of the suspects arrested were using Social Visit Passes and acted as drug mules by receiving payments ranging from RM6,000 to RM15,000, according to the currency of their respective countries of origin,” Shazeli said.
All seven suspects have been remanded to facilitate investigations under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which carries the death penalty or life imprisonment.
Shazeli added that the police also confiscated jewellery and cash in several foreign denominations believed to be linked to a transnational drug trafficking syndicate.
He said urine screenings showed several suspects testing positive for tetrahydrocannabinol (THC).
Shazeli stressed that police would continue acting firmly against drug trafficking.
“The public is strongly warned never to agree to carry or handle another person’s luggage without knowing its actual contents, so as to avoid being exploited as drug mules,” he said.
Also present at the press conference were Selangor deputy police chief Mohd Zaini Abu Hassan, Selangor NCID chief Mohd Faisal Mohd Noor, KLIA police chief Ravi Munusamy, and Selangor NCID deputy chief Rumaizur Rahman Ab Sattar.
