SUKMA 2026: Opening ceremony venue to be finalised this week

PETALING JAYA, July 14 — The venue for the opening ceremony of the 2026 Malaysia Games (SUKMA) will be finalised this week during a steering committee meeting to be chaired by Menteri Besar Dato' Seri Amirudin Shari.

State executive councillor for youth, sports, and entrepreneurship Mohd Najwan Halimi said that, at present, Dataran Kemerdekaan Shah Alam is almost certain to be selected as the opening ceremony venue, in line with the state government's intention to organise the biennial games in a prudent and modest manner.

"We are currently in the process of finalising it, and we have already conducted site visits and the necessary assessments. It is almost certain that the venue will be Dataran Kemerdekaan Shah Alam.

"We will hold the steering committee meeting this week, which will be chaired by the Dato' Menteri Besar of Selangor. At that meeting, we will make the decision and then announce it.

"For now, all I can say is that Dataran Kemerdekaan Shah Alam is almost certain to be the venue. InsyaAllah (God willing), we will make the final decision this week," he said.

Najwan was speaking to the media after officiating the launch of the Selangor Craft Competition: Tengku Permaisuri of Selangor Cup 2026 today.

Previously, he said that Dataran Kemerdekaan Shah Alam was almost certain to be chosen as the venue for the Games' opening ceremony.

Several aspects, including security arrangements, are being finalised with the Shah Alam City Council before the official announcement.

SUKMA Selangor 2026 is scheduled to be held from August 15 to August 24, while PARA SUKMA 2026 will take place from September 5 to September 14.

The Games will feature 469 medal events across 37 sports, while PARA SUKMA will comprise 316 medal events in 10 sports.

The country's largest multi-sport event will involve participation from all state contingents, with Brunei Darussalam officially confirmed as an invited contingent, bringing the total number of participating contingents to 15.
