SHAH ALAM, July 14 — Police have arrested a male university student for allegedly stalking a female student on multiple occasions in Section 7, here.
Shah Alam police chief ACP Sarudin Samah said the suspect was arrested by officers from the district’s Criminal Investigation Department at 8.30 pm on Sunday, following a police report lodged by the victim at 3.55 pm on the same day.
Sarudin said the statement was issued after closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage of the incident went viral on social media.
The footage showed a man in his 20s taking a pair of shoes from a residential unit at an apartment in Section 7 before smelling them.
“The 22-year-old victim, who is a student at a public university, reported that she had been repeatedly harassed and stalked by the same man seen in the CCTV footage from April until now, both at her place of study and in her residential area,” he said in a statement today.
Sarudin added that the suspect has no prior criminal record and that a preliminary urine screening test returned negative for drugs.
“Police submitted a remand application for the suspect yesterday at the Shah Alam Magistrate’s Court,” he said.
The case is being investigated under Section 507A of the Penal Code for stalking. Upon conviction, the offence carries a penalty of up to three years’ imprisonment, a fine, or both.
Sarudin urged anyone with information on the case to assist in the investigation by contacting investigating officer Sabryna Taha at 014-513 4097.
