KUALA LUMPUR, July 8 — The Smart Selangor Delivery Unit (SSDU) has signed a memorandum of cooperation (MOC) with EER Digital Sdn Bhd to explore the potential of a high-density AI data centre using energy-efficient, sustainable technologies in Selangor.

SSDU chief executive officer Gaddafi Musli said the cooperation would also focus on the effectiveness of immersion cooling on graphics processing units (GPUs) developed by tech giant Lead Wealth International via its subsidiary BYD Electronics, a strategic partner of EER Digital.

He said SSDU would be a facilitator to study the suitability of such technologies for Selangor, which could become the first state to adopt them.

“This cooperation doesn’t just involve building new data centres, but is an exploration effort to help the state government make decisions based on comprehensive data and assessments.

“This technology is proprietary, using liquid coolants to cool GPUs and thus able to improve the efficiency of data centre operations.

“It has the potential to reduce energy use by between 35 and 40 per cent compared with conventional cooling methods, which would reduce environmental burdens,” he told reporters here today after the MOC signing ceremony at W Hotel.

Gaddafi said the pilot AI data centre project aims to reduce the burden on existing data centres that have high electricity and water needs.

“Several locations are being (evaluated), including the Menteri Besar Selangor (Incorporation), or MBI, building and other state government-owned buildings that only need about 20m of space to house the facility.

“This MOC is exploratory and (for a) pilot project. SSDU will assess how this technology can improve energy efficiency and ensure cybersecurity before anything is implemented,” he added.

He said the cooperation is in line with Selangor’s efforts to strengthen the AI digital economic ecosystem by exploring new technologies that are more efficient, sustainable, and environmentally friendly.

“SSDU, as an agency acting as a coordinator or as a catalyst to digital innovation in Selangor, is taking the initiative to explore this technology, so we hope Selangor, as Malaysia’s economic engine, can become the first state to adopt such a technology by building a high-density data centre,” Gaddafi said.
