SHAH ALAM, July 6 — Heavy rain triggered flash flood warnings in several parts of Kuala Lumpur and Selangor early this morning, with emergency sirens activated after river levels reportedly breached danger thresholds.
According to Kosmo, the incident followed a warning by the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia), which forecast thunderstorms, heavy rain and strong winds across Kuala Lumpur and several areas in Selangor from 2.30 am to 7 am.
MetMalaysia said the affected areas in Selangor included Kuala Selangor, Hulu Selangor, Klang, Gombak, Petaling, Kuala Langat, Hulu Langat and Sepang.
It said warnings are issued when there are signs of thunderstorms with rainfall intensity exceeding 20mm per hour, either approaching or expected to occur for more than an hour.
“Thunderstorm warnings are short-term warnings valid for not more than six hours for each issuance,” it said in a Facebook post.
Residents in affected areas also shared on social media that they heard a flood warning siren near Jalan Ipoh at about 4.27 am.
The posts claimed that the emergency siren was activated after river levels rose beyond the safe limit.
Kosmo reported that the Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) and relevant agencies have yet to issue an official statement on the exact number of affected areas or any ongoing rescue operations.
