Selangor urged to set KPIs so local councils improve public transport access

SHAH ALAM, June 19 — Subang Jaya assemblyman Michelle Ng Mei Sze today urged the Selangor government to set key performance indicators (KPIs) to ensure local councils improve public transport access in areas under their jurisdiction.

She said this would ensure the state government’s public transport fare subsidy can be optimally utilised by commuters.

She explained that the RM30 fare subsidy is a proactive measure to encourage public transport use, but warned its effectiveness depends on whether the people can access public transport stations.

Ng added that the main challenge is still first- and last-mile connectivity, especially for those who have to walk or bike to transit hubs.

“It’s not that the people don’t want to take the LRT or smart buses, but physical constraints to reach those stations are often a disappointment.

“The state government must direct all local authorities to focus on upgrading and expanding pedestrian facilities and roofed bicycle lanes,” she said when debating Phase 2 of the Selangor Resilience Enhancement Package (SREP), tabled by Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari, during an assembly sitting here today.

She said each local authority must be given clear KPIs to meet to ensure pedestrian access facilities are safe, inclusive, and user-friendly, especially for people with disabilities and parents pushing prams.

Ng also suggested bicycle lanes be provided within a 400m radius of every major public transport hub.

She explained that these facilities must be developed in line with the expansion of Demand-Responsive Transit (DRT) systems.

“With such physical facilities at the local (government) level, combined with the DRT ecosystem mobilised by the state, only then can we build a practical, green mobility chain.

“This will ensure million-ringgit investments in public transport subsidies truly present the maximum impact,” she said.

Earlier, Amirudin expressed hope that the monthly RM30 fare subsidy under the SREP would encourage more people to use public transport, adding that the initiative is available on the NINE app.

“Part of the RM131 million (SREP Phase 1) that I announced previously, applications for the Public Transport Fare Subsidy for six months opened on June 1, 2026,” he said.
