SHAH ALAM, June 19 — The state government has announced a three-month moratorium for its Smart Rental Scheme tenants and repayments under the State Housing Loan Scheme, as part of efforts to ease the financial burden brought about by rising living costs.

Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari said the measures are part of the Selangor Resilience Enhancement Package Phase Two that was tabled during the State Legislative Assembly special sitting today.

Under the Smart Rental Scheme, tenants will be offered a rental moratorium from October to December, involving a RM2.22 million allocation.

The moratorium, which will be coordinated by the Selangor Housing and Property Board, will be implemented based on applications submitted by tenants.

“A total of 1,012 Selangor residents are currently renting housing units across the state under the Smart Rental programme, with monthly rental rates ranging between RM450 and RM1,300.

“The state government is committed to ensuring that these rental rates remain unchanged and do not increase, particularly under current circumstances.

“As an additional measure, the state understands the challenges tenants may face should the cost of living rise over the coming months. Therefore, all 1,012 tenants will be offered a three-month rental moratorium beginning in October,” he said.

Introduced in 2016, the Smart Rental Scheme was designed to help eligible families who are unable to purchase a home immediately by providing access to affordable rental units while allowing tenants to build savings towards home ownership.

For the State Housing Loan Scheme, Amirudin said the administration is similarly offering a three-month repayment moratorium from October to December for civil servants servicing housing loans under the initiative.

The assistance, which involves a RM2.54 million allocation, will benefit 2,333 civil servants in Selangor, subject to applications.

The two initiatives are part of the state government’s broader measures to strengthen economic resilience and help households better manage rising living costs.
