SHAH ALAM, June 19 — Over 21,000 traders renting premises under local authorities across Selangor will enjoy a 30 per cent reduction in rental rates for six months beginning July, said Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari.
Speaking at the Selangor State Legislative Assembly special sitting today, he said the move will ease operating costs and help keep food prices affordable for the public.
The initiative under Phase Two of the Selangor Resilience Strengthening Package involves a RM4.5 million allocation, benefiting 21,234 traders statewide.
“The community of hawkers and small businesses renting shops and stalls at local authority premises are frontliners representing the people’s daily economy.
“To encourage them to continue operating without having to increase food prices, the state government will offer a 30 per cent reduction in rental rates at all local council premises for six months from July to December.
“The reduction will be given automatically without requiring any application from traders,” he said when tabling the package.
Under the Selangor Resilience Strengthening Package Phase One, announced on April 16, the state government allocated RM145.8 million in targeted assistance, including cash aid for low-income households, support for students, and efforts to strengthen food security.
Phase Two, which involves an allocation of RM209.26 million, expands the focus to sustaining small traders and ensuring economic continuity.
Amirudin added that the state administration is also placing emphasis on improving public facilities in addition to developing new infrastructure.
As part of the effort, it is allocating RM14 million under the Selangor Penyayang Project to benefit communities throughout the state.
"Among the initiatives are the upgrading of public park facilities and repainting works for flats that are more than 15 years old,” he said.
