52 foreigners detained in Gombak immigration raids

SHAH ALAM, June 18 — Fifty-two foreigners were detained in three raids by the Selangor Immigration Department in Gombak on Sunday.

Ops Kutip, Ops Selera and Ops Sapu were carried out based on intelligence and complaints from the public about the presence of foreigners at several hotspots, including night markets, hostels and residential areas. It involved 34 enforcement officers.

“Throughout the operation, 72 people, locals and foreigners, were investigated. The checks led to the arrest of 52 foreigners suspected of committing various offences under the Immigration Act 1959/63 and the Immigration Regulations 1963.

“In addition, one witness summons was issued and an employer was also taken into custody to assist in investigations,” the Selangor Immigration Department said in a Facebook post today.

It added that 59 people were questioned at the first location — a night market in Batu Caves — leading to the detention of 39 foreigners.

Those arrested were from Myanmar, Indonesia, Bangladesh, India and Pakistan, suspected of illegal entry and overstaying offences under Sections 6(1)(c) and 15(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63.

The department said at the second location, a hostel in Selayang Baru, four foreigners were questioned and detained for suspected offences under Section 6(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63 and Regulation 39(b) of the Immigration Regulations for violating their travel visas.

At the third location, a residential area in Batu Caves, nine foreigners were inspected and detained. They are believed to be from Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, and are suspected of offences under Section 6(1)(c) and Section 15(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63.

“All detained foreigners have been taken to the Immigration Office for documentation and further investigation. Further measures will be taken in accordance with the provisions of the immigration laws.

“The Selangor Immigration Department will continue to intensify enforcement operations continuously to curb the presence of undocumented foreign immigrants and ensure compliance with the country's immigration laws,” it said.

The department also reminded the public not to engage with those impersonating immigration officers or misusing officers’ names and photographs for fraudulent purposes.
