SHAH ALAM, June 15 — Approximately 120,000 school students in Selangor will benefit from a free breakfast assistance programme to be implemented from August under the Selangor Resilience Enhancement Package.

Menteri Besar Dato' Seri Amirudin Shari said the state government has already identified eligible students, using data from the Selangor Education Department (JPNS), to ensure that assistance reaches the intended beneficiaries.

“This assistance will cover primary and secondary school students, religious schools under the Selangor Islamic Religious Department (JAIS), as well as educational institutions registered with JPNS.

“The state government is taking some time before the programme begins in August to ensure that food quality and safety requirements comply with the standards set by the Health Ministry,” he said during a media conference today.

Earlier this afternoon, Amirudin officiated Phase One of the Package at the State Secretariat Building.

He added that the free breakfast programme will not include approximately 55,000 students in Selangor who are already benefiting from the Supplementary Food Programme (RMT).

“The implementation method for the state government’s free breakfast programme will be broadly similar to the RMT scheme, with meals expected to be provided two to three times a week.

“This programme focuses on vulnerable groups, including students from lower-income families, those who are unable to have breakfast before school, as well as children whose parents work shifts and face time constraints,” Amirudin said.

On April 16, he announced the implementation of the free breakfast initiative for students in 873 schools, to be delivered through local authorities, beginning in August.

The initiative forms part of the RM131 million Selangor Resilience Enhancement Package, which was introduced to address rising living costs and uncertainties in the global economic environment.
