Highland Towers condominium to be demolished before year's end

SHAH ALAM, June 14 — The decaying Highland Towers condominium complex in Hulu Klang, which has remained abandoned for more than three decades, is expected to be demolished before the end of this year following a court decision permitting the action.

Harian Metro reported that Ampang Jaya Municipal Council's (MPAJ) deputy president Hasrolnizam Shaari said the Magistrates’ Court approved its application to demolish the building structure last week.

The local authority is currently coordinating the next course of action, including identifying the party responsible for carrying out the demolition works.

“We will organise a coordination meeting involving the unit owners, represented by the developer, and the insolvency authorities.

“We do not expect this matter to take much longer because it is now clear to all parties that this is the agreed objective. We expect the demolition process to take place within this year,” he said after attending the Car-Free Day programme in conjunction with the MPAJ-level World Environment Day 2026 celebration in Ampang today.

Originally built between 1974 and 1982, the three-block complex was abandoned following the collapse of Block One on December 11, 1993, due to a major landslide which killed 48 people. Although unaffected, residents in Blocks Two and Three were evacuated for their safety and never returned to resume their occupancy.

In a separate development, Hasrolnizam said they remain committed to implementing various green programmes and initiatives to support the sustainable development agenda and increase public awareness of environmental conservation.

Among the efforts undertaken are recycling programmes, cleanliness campaigns, tree-planting activities, and environmental education initiatives throughout MPAJ's administrative areas.

“The Car-Free Day programme organised today is not merely a recreational or weekend leisure activity.

“Rather, it is a manifestation of MPAJ’s commitment to promoting healthy lifestyles, reducing dependence on motor vehicles and increasing public awareness of the importance of environmental conservation,” he said.

Hasrolnizam added that the World Environment Day celebration also serves as a platform to remind the public of their shared responsibility in preserving environmental sustainability.

“Environmental sustainability is not solely the responsibility of the government or local authorities, but a shared responsibility of the entire community.

“Every small action, such as practising recycling, reducing plastic consumption, maintaining cleanliness in surrounding areas and planting trees, can have a significant impact on environmental well-being,” he said.
