MPAJ fines 107 food premises, tightens rules on workshops

SHAH ALAM, Apr 2 — The Ampang Jaya Municipal Council (MPAJ) issued 107 compounds to food premises for hygiene-related offences, following inspections on 109 eateries in the municipality up to March.

The Star reported its deputy president Hasrolnizam Shaari as saying that the inspections found various non-compliances, including failure to obtain food handler certification, lack of typhoid vaccinations, and pest infestations.

“If their activities do not comply, we issue reminders followed by notices so that improvements can be made,” he said.

Hasrolnizam added that enforcement efforts under the council’s ‘Ops Kebersihan’ initiative are ongoing, with follow-up inspections conducted to ensure operators address violations.

“The result is that operators are now clearer about their responsibilities. We are also seeing fewer notices being issued, as many have started to comply on their own.

“When notices are issued, we find that operators are able to rectify the issues quickly,” he said.

Each offence carries a compound of up to RM1,000 under the Food Establishment Licensing (MPAJ) By-laws 2007 and Food Handling By-Laws (MPAJ) 2007.

Meanwhile, the council is intensifying its monitoring of automotive workshops in Ampang Jaya to ensure they comply with a statewide directive requiring such businesses to relocate to light-industrial areas.

Hasrolnizam said that action will be taken against those found operating in residential zones.

“We introduced a requirement for all such businesses to obtain licences before January 1 this year. Those who fail to comply will face fines.

“If they continue operating without approval, we will proceed with seizure,” he said.

MPAJ currently oversees 355 automotive workshops, including car accessory centres, and has also introduced a policy requiring operators to rent designated parking bays to improve traffic flow.

“We have seen improvements in traffic flow and parking management in these areas since this was introduced,” Hasrolnizam said.
