KUALA LANGAT, June 13 — Selangor’s water resources are estimated to be able to last up to nine months, amid the El Nino phenomenon that is expected to bring drier weather and reduced rainfall.

Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari said the capacity is supported by the implementation of the Selangor Off River Storage Scheme (SORSS) and the Raw Water Guarantee Scheme (SJAM), which strengthen the state’s water supply security.

He said several additional ponds and former mining lakes near major rivers have also been identified by the Selangor Water Management Authority (LUAS) for upgrading into water storage infrastructure to increase raw water reserves.

“These ponds have been branded as SORSS, involving more than 140 ponds clustered according to river basins and adapted to their surrounding environment and characteristics.

“Although full infrastructure development has not yet been implemented, water from these storage ponds is already available for use at any time through mobile pumping operations.

“In general, these ponds are used annually during water supply crises, especially in the Sungai Selangor and Sungai Langat basins. Through these SORSS reserves, alternative water sources can be optimised for up to three months,” he said.

He said this in a speech read by state executive councillor for Environment Jamaliah Jamaluddin at the Selangor World Water Day 2026 and Low Carbon Day celebration at Pantai Kelanang here today.

Amirudin said SORSS planning aligns with the SJAM project that was completed on May 13 last year, and involves pumping water from storage ponds into rivers and the use of mobile pumps to ensure water treatment plants (WTPs) can abstract and treat raw water.

“Overall, the state’s water resources are estimated to be able to last up to nine months in the face of current weather conditions.

“In the Sungai Selangor basin, several storage areas are equipped with pumping facilities with a maximum capacity of 3,840 million litres per day under SJAM Packages A and B, along with mobile pumps.

“Meanwhile, in the Sungai Semenyih basin, pumping facilities with a capacity of 770 million litres per day have been developed under SJAM Package D. These facilities also serve dual functions for pollution control and improving raw water capacity."
