KUALA LANGAT, June 13 — Selangor is strengthening its preparedness to ensure stable water supply as the El Nino phenomenon begins this month, bringing drier weather and reduced rainfall.
Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari said the state government, through the Selangor Water Management Authority (LUAS) and related agencies, has implemented several measures, including controlled release of dam water in accordance with Section 41 of the LUAS Enactment 1999.
Other measures include daily monitoring of dam levels and capacity via LUAS’ Integrated Water Resources Information Management System (IWRIMS), as well as the development and implementation of the Selangor Off River Storage Scheme (SORSS) as an alternative water source.
“Selangor is also optimising groundwater usage, implementing the Zero Discharge Policy (ZDP) for water quality control, and curbing pollution sources.
“Continuous 24-hour monitoring and mitigation operations by LUAS’ Elite Water Squad, as well as the Raw Water Guarantee Scheme (SJAM), are also being carried out,” he said in a speech read by state executive councillor for environment Jamaliah Jamaluddin at the Selangor World Water Day 2026 and Low Carbon Day celebration at Pantai Kelanang here today.
Amirudin said the state administration will ensure water resource readiness not only in terms of quantity but also quality, so it can be treated and supplied to the public by water treatment plants (WTPs)
He added that the state government remains committed to ensuring the sustainability of water resources by strengthening preventive measures against pollution that could disrupt the WTP operations.
Among the preventive measures are targeted river monitoring through the River Monitoring Programme introduced by LUAS in 2023 to identify discharge points from development, commercial and industrial activities, enabling joint action with relevant agencies.
"In addition, the Selangor Earth Surface Activity Monitoring System was developed through a memorandum of understanding between LUAS and the Malaysian Space Agency (MYSA) in August 2024 to monitor state water resources using satellite technology, to improve earlier drone-based surveillance methods.
He said the system supports LUAS operations, particularly in monitoring land use activities affecting water bodies, identifying potential pollution sources, enhancing enforcement effectiveness, and supporting data-driven decision-making.
Previously, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said grassroots-level preparedness must be strengthened in light of the El Nino phenomenon.
