SHAH ALAM, Jun 8 — Cleaning and desilting works for monsoon drains across Klang are being carried out extensively under a RM6.2 million allocation to improve drainage efficiency and reduce flood risks.
Klang Royal City Council (MBDK) Environmental Services Department director Zaireezal Ahmad Zainuddin said the works would be carried out over nine months through four phases implemented in stages.
He said MBDK has appointed 32 contractors to undertake the clean-up works, as the companies have sufficient equipment and manpower to clear drains clogged with overgrown vegetation, silt deposits and rubbish.
“The contractors are using machinery such as backhoes, in addition to manual cleaning methods, to ensure water flow is not obstructed,” he was quoted as saying by StarMetro.
He added that the council had also found various bulky discarded items, including mattresses and damaged furniture, dumped into monsoon drains, disrupting water flow.

According to him, irresponsible dumping of bulky waste into drains causes rubbish, silt and organic waste to accumulate, resulting in overflow into nearby residential areas during heavy rain.
Zaireezal said the first phase of the clean-up programme began this month and is scheduled for completion in August.
The first phase covers Taman Meru Indah, Bukit Kapar 2, Bukit Kapar 1, Taman Sri Kapar, Taman Meru Putra, Taman Desa Permai 3 and Taman Desa Bukit Nilam.
Also included are Jalan Teratai, Jalan Abadi 1A, Jalan Dahlia, Jalan Beruas, Jalan Puding, Jalan Bunga Raya and Jalan Kenangan.
Cleaning works are also being carried out along Jalan Khamis, Jalan Kasban, Jalan Jabbar, Jalan Kassim, the Jalan Salleh industrial area, Jalan Abdul Manan 1 and Jalan Abdul Manan.
He said the second phase would run from September 1 to October 25, followed by the third phase from October 26 to December 20, while the final phase is scheduled from December 21 until February 14, 2027.
According to Zaireezal, large-scale cleaning operations are also being conducted in several flood-prone hotspots, including Taman Eng Ann, Taman Berkeley, Klang Utama, Sementa, Klang Perdana, Rantau Panjang, Bandar Bukit Raja 1 and 2, as well as Bandar Sultan Suleiman 1 and 2.
He said the council would continue monitoring cleaning works in other areas, including Jalan Dato Tahir Manan, Jalan Haji Sirat, Jalan Sungai Puloh, Jalan Goh Hock Huat and Jalan Bakti, in collaboration with KDEB Waste Management.
Strict action, including the issuance of compounds and immediate clean-up orders, will be taken against contractors who fail to carry out the works according to the required standards, he added.
