SHAH ALAM, May 26 — The Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) will demolish fire-damaged food stalls in Section 51A to make way for safer, more modern kiosks under the Housing and Local Government Ministry (KPKT).

The council said the blaze on May 19 destroyed seven out of the eight Gerai 51/243 stalls, with structural damage estimated at nearly 90 per cent.

It said site inspections and assessments found that building KPKT kiosks at the site is more suitable, as the original concept of the stalls was for take-away businesses.

“The redevelopment proposal is expected to improve safety and comfort for traders and visitors, while also helping to ease traffic flow and reduce obstructions in the surrounding area,” it said in a Facebook post today.

“As such, MBPJ has decided to demolish existing structures and replace them with KPKT kiosks that are more modern, safe and systematic.”

As a sign of concern for affected traders, MBPJ said it would waive rent for June and July.

MBPJ said this following a site visit led by Petaling Jaya Mayor Dato’ Mohamad Zahri Samingon to inspect damage from the fire and meet affected traders.

Also present were MBPJ Zone 14 councillor Asogan Subramaniam, deputy management secretary Fauzi Maarop, Engineering Department director Ahmad Roslan Hairudin, and Health and Environment Services Department deputy director (health) Mahzura Mohd Amin.
