‘Selayang, with its high potential, needs master plan for development’

SUNGAI BULOH, May 23 — Selayang has emerged as among Selangor’s high-potential areas thanks to its rapid infrastructure growth and expanding development, said Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari.

As such, he urged the Selayang Municipal Council (MPS) to more comprehensively plan urban growth to ensure sustainable, systematic development.

He explained that Selayang can no longer be developed on a small or isolated scale, but needs a comprehensive master plan that encompasses old and new developments including residential neighbourhoods, industrial areas, road networks, green spaces, and digital facilities.

He added that major changes in Selayang over the past few decades prove the area can grow into a more modern and competitive city.

“When I looked at Selayang’s developments from around 2008, among the main challenges were unplanned growth, illegal waste dumping, and old areas that were too dense.

“But today, Selayang has undergone a huge transformation and has much greater potential for development,” Amirudin said at the launch of the Selayangku Sayang Bandaraya Pintar 2030 coffee table book at Royale Beling Glasshall here last night.

He added that MPS’ revenue growth to hundreds of millions of ringgit gives it the ability to more strategically plan the municipality’s development.

However, he said, the revenue growth must translate into benefits for the people through quality public facilities, a more comfortable urban environment, and meticulously planned development.

He also asserted that MPS’ current challenge is to optimise the growth of Selayang and its surroundings as new infrastructure comes up, including links to Rawang and Serendah.

Amirudin said mature areas like Jalan Selayang Baru must be given attention to prevent congestion, lack of basic facilities, drainage issues, and unbalanced growth, and urged MPS to plan ahead so the municipality may grow into a city.
