SHAH ALAM, May 19 — An approach centred on realistic policies and assistance closely aligned with daily needs is one of the key strategies for attracting young voters ahead of the 16th general election (GE16).
Parti Amanah's Women deputy chief cum state executive councillor for women's empowerment and social welfare Anfaal Saari said initiatives introduced by the government, especially as the country faces economic uncertainty arising from global conflicts, must benefit the younger generation so they do not feel marginalised.
Targeted assistance for young people could help secure their livelihoods while also increasing their confidence in the current administration.

“For example, under the Selangor Resilience Enhancement Package launched following the West Asia conflict, the state government is providing 50,000 Kita Selangor Vouchers. It is important for young people, especially those who have lost their jobs, to be included as recipients.
“We can also assist through policies and initiatives under the Social Security Organisation. In addition, there is the RM30 subsidy for public transport.
"These initiatives should also target this generation to ease their burden while encouraging the use of public transportation,” she told Media Selangor.

Meanwhile, Parti Keadilan Rakyat's Angkatan Muda deputy chief Muhammad Izuan Ahmad Kasim believes that identity politics touching on racial and religious sensitivities is no longer suitable for engaging younger voters.
Young people today are more mature and better able to evaluate issues wisely because they are exposed to a wide range of information sources.
“We need to focus on the policies being offered and what is being delivered to them. This is more important, and these policies must be communicated effectively so that they become aware of them.
“We cannot underestimate the intelligence of today’s younger generation,” he said.

Similarly, Kota Kemuning state assemblyman Preakas Sampunathan said that efforts to engage young people should also align with their interests and current lifestyles, including expanding e-sports programmes.
Organising more programmes related to virtual sports could serve as an effective platform to engage and connect with young people.
“We should further intensify these sports programmes as a sign of support. However, the education sector must also remain a priority because it forms the foundation of Selangor's progress,” he said.
