JOHOR BAHRU, May 18 — Chants of reform once again echoed through Johor Bahru as thousands of Pakatan Harapan supporters and delegates filled the Persada Johor International Convention Centre yesterday in an atmosphere markedly different from before.

Behind the spirited slogans, thunderous applause and confident speeches, it was evident that the 2026 Harapan Convention was not merely an ordinary party gathering but a platform to consolidate political strength ahead of the 16th general election (GE16).

The tone of the leaders, the movements of party machinery, and the messages delivered throughout the convention all seemed to suggest that Malaysia's political climate is entering a more heated phase.

Nearly 10,000 delegates from across the country attended with a common objective: to ensure Harapan retains Putrajaya amid an increasingly challenging political landscape, one that also requires strong cooperation among parties within the Unity Government.

Several speeches by key leaders, including Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim himself, also hinted that GE16 could arrive sooner than expected.

Throughout the convention, themes like political stability, continuity in governance, and confidence in the performance of the MADANI government were repeatedly emphasised by party leaders.

Anwar, as Harapan president, appeared determined to shift away from the defensive approach often imposed by the Opposition by making the MADANI government’s economic achievements the coalition’s main political capital heading into GE16.

Among the highlights presented were the projected 5.4 per cent first-quarter gross domestic product growth, the highest investment figures in the nation’s history, low inflation and unemployment rates, and increases in civil servant salaries, described as the largest ever implemented.

In a firmer tone, he also reminded delegates that Harapan can no longer rely solely on sentiment but must instead defend its governing record with facts and achievements that the people can feel directly.

Signs of early election begin emerging

Despite the emphasis on government performance, Anwar’s speech also hinted that the heat of GE16 may be drawing closer when he raised the possibility of Parliament being dissolved earlier than expected.

His remarks immediately heightened the atmosphere in the hall, as Anwar emphasised that the coalition would not hesitate to face an early election should political "battle" become the chosen path of certain parties within the government.

The Tambun MP's stern position comes a day after Johor Barisan Nasional (BN) chairman Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi confirmed that the coalition intends to contest the state election independently, sparking various perceptions regarding the political landscape ahead of the next polls.

DAP secretary-general Anthony Loke also hinted at political readiness by proposing that Harapan contest all 36 seats in the Negeri Sembilan State Legislative Assembly.

Meanwhile, Selangor Harapan chairman cum Menteri Besar Dato' Seri Amirudin Shari highlighted the growing challenge of identity and racial politics, which the Opposition is increasingly playing up.

He reminded delegates that the multicultural approach forming the foundation of Harapan's struggle must be explained more boldly so that Malaysians of all races continue to place confidence in the government’s agenda.

Meanwhile, the voice of the younger generation was also highlighted when Deputy Angkatan Muda Keadilan chief Muhammad Izuan Ahmad Kasim described the convention as an important platform to strengthen party machinery, especially in efforts to engage young voters.

“The president’s message is already clear. Efforts on the ground must be intensified even though the machinery has been working since the beginning of the year. The government’s achievements must be publicised.

“This is among the strategies to ensure we continue governing. We cannot rely on politics of hatred; instead, we must use facts as our weapon to convince society of Harapan's administration,” he said.

Overall, this year’s convention showed that Harapan is no longer operating in defensive mode but has begun to advance a more aggressive narrative in preparation for the possibility of an earlier and more challenging political contest.

From the tone of the leaders’ speeches, the message was unmistakably clear: the coalition wants its entire machinery to be prepared from now on, to strengthen public confidence in the government’s performance, and to ensure that support momentum remains strong ahead of GE16.
