SHAH ALAM, May 19 — The Sultan of Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah Alhaj has called on the people, especially the younger generation, to appreciate the fundamental principles of the Rukun Negara by visiting Dataran Selangor to read the contents inscribed on the Rukun Negara Monument's Plaque.
The Selangor Royal Office said His Royal Highness decreed that the Plaque, constructed and installed by the Selangor Public Works Department, serves as a reminder to the people of the history behind the creation of the Rukun Negara, which forms the foundation of national unity.
The Ruler also expressed hope that visitors to the location would understand and embrace the values embodied in the principles.
“I have personally funded the full cost of constructing this Rukun Negara Monument Plaque and the seating area.
“I hope members of the public visiting Dataran Selangor, especially the younger generation, will read and appreciate these fundamental principles of the Rukun Negara, which serve as the main pillar of unity among Malaysians,” said Sultan Sharafuddin in the Office's statement today.
Earlier, His Royal Highness visited Dataran Selangor to personally inspect the Rukun Negara Monument Plaque, which was erected opposite the Selangor State Flagpole.
The construction of the monument is intended to remind the people of the history behind the formation of the Rukun Negara concept following the May 13 racial riots in 1969.
“The National Operations Council, which was established as the governing body at the time, consulted with its members to formulate the concept of the Rukun Negara as a manifestation of national ideology aimed at strengthening racial unity in this country,” said the Sultan.
