Ex-clinic workers charged over woman's death during alleged abortion procedure

KUALA LUMPUR, May 12 — Two former clinic workers pleaded not guilty in the Magistrate’s Court today to a charge of causing the death of a woman while allegedly performing an abortion procedure two years ago.

Philomena Mathias, 83, and Rusbur Kaur Partab Singh, 73, were jointly charged with causing the death of a 45-year-old woman through an act allegedly carried out with the intention of causing a miscarriage.

The two were charged with committing the offence at a clinic along Jalan Changkat Bukit Bintang at 5.30pm on October 22, 2024.

The charge, framed under Section 314 of the Penal Code, provides a maximum jail sentence of 10 years and a fine, if convicted.

Magistrate Illi Marisqa Khalizan allowed bail of RM3,000 each with one surety and fixed June 29 for mention of the case.

The prosecution was conducted by Deputy Public Prosecutor Syafika Azwa Fikri, while both accused were represented by lawyer George Loh.
