SHAH ALAM, May 12 — The Ministry of Education (MOE) is prepared to consider a proposal to station security personnel in every school as part of efforts to enhance safety levels.
Its minister, Fadhlina Sidek, said the School Safety Management Guidelines are currently being finalised to improve existing procedures, Bernama reported.
“MOE is finalising the new safety guidelines through the involvement of the Education Institution Safety Reform Committee, which comprises experts from various backgrounds.
“On the proposal to place security personnel in schools, MOE will study this suggestion,” she said when asked about the need to deploy Malaysia Volunteer Corps (RELA) members in schools as a safety measure.
Fadhlina said the ministry would ensure the finalised guidelines remain aligned with current challenges and continue to be relevant in protecting students and school communities.
She added that the initiative is being driven through a special committee involving representatives from various parties, including the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) and the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH).
“This committee also includes representatives from non-governmental organisations as well as community representatives to ensure that issues related to school safety are given due attention.
“We have also instructed school teachers and principals to take strict safety measures. There is no compromise when it comes to safety,” she said.
Previously, a Form One student died after being hit by a car in front of the girls’ surau at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Tanjong Mas in Kota Bharu, Kelantan, on April 12.
On May 5, a Year Two pupil also died after being hit by a van in front of the main gate of Sekolah Kebangsaan Seri Maimon in Parit Sulong, Batu Pahat.
