11 hikers rescued from tunnel after being trapped by rapid river current

SHAH ALAM, May 8 — Eleven hikers who were trapped in a tunnel amid rapid currents at the Sungai Pisang Waterfall Trailhead in Batu Caves were rescued this afternoon.

Selangor Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) assistant director (operations) Ahmad Mukhlis Mukhtar said the agency received an emergency call about the incident at 4.11pm.

“They were trapped after a passage to cross the river was blocked due to rapid currents. A team of six from the Selayang Fire and Rescue Station were sent to the scene.

“The operations commander reported that at the scene, the 11 hikers, five men and six women, were found trapped due to rapid currents, but they were found safe at 5.15pm,” he said in a statement today.

According to Mukhlis, the rescuers used safety ropes and personal flotation devices to evacuate the victims.

He said the operation ended at 7.02pm after the victims were confirmed to be safe.

The firefighters then performed checks in the area to ensure there were no more hazards that could harm other hikers.
