CEBU, May 8 — The government has assured that the nation’s fuel supply is more stable now thanks to the government’s proactive measures, especially under PETRONAS’ management, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
Anwar, who is also finance minister, said lowering RON95 consumption, tightening enforcement to curb diesel leakages and smuggling, and importing fuel have helped strengthen the country’s supply security.
“In terms of supply availability, the situation is no longer as strained as it was two months ago,” he told the media after the 48th ASEAN Summit and Related Meetings here today.
Anwar was responding to questions on assurances over the country’s fuel supply status, which was previously reported to be sufficient until June.
On the fuel supply issues arising from the West Asia crisis and its impact on the global economy, he said the matter was among issues discussed during the summit.
He said ASEAN countries also discussed joint efforts to address supply shortages and ease rising cost pressures, including on food, fertiliser and transport.
“ASEAN has taken proactive measures, such as ways to increase production, and countries with excess supplies have also decided to prioritise ASEAN,” Anwar added.
