SHAH ALAM, May 7 — A foreign worker has died from severe injuries after falling 11.6m at a construction site in Section 15 here on Monday.
The Selangor Occupational Safety and Health Department (DOSH) received the report, and initial investigations on Tuesday found that the victim and his coworkers had been instructed to carry out cleaning duties on the fourth floor of a building still under construction.
DOSH said that while the workers were performing the task, the victim is believed to have attempted to lift a board before falling through an open space.
Following the investigation, Selangor DOSH issued a notice to suspend work activities on that floor, as well as a no-disturbance order to ensure the scene would be preserved. An improvement notice was also issued, requiring the construction company to update its risk assessment procedures.
The construction company and witnesses to the accident have been called to assist in the investigation, which is being carried out under Section 15(1) and Section 18B of the Occupational Safety and Health Act 1994 and the Occupational Safety and Health Regulations.
Section 15(1) requires employers to ensure the safety, health and welfare of their employees, while Section 18B mandates risk assessments for all work activities. Offenders may be fined up to RM500,000.
DOSH said it takes workplace accidents seriously and urged employers to ensure safe working environments, conduct thorough risk assessments and implement appropriate risk controls.
