SHAH ALAM, May 3 – The Selayang Municipal Council (MPS) plans to step up the use of closed-circuit television (CCTV) as part of a broader push to tackle illegal dumping and recurring waste issues within its jurisdiction.

The Star reported that its President Shahman Jalaludin said the proposal emerged from a three-day internal workshop last month that brought together various MPS departments, councillors, and KDEB Waste Management (KDEBWM).

Discussions during the session focused on practical challenges on the ground and identified solutions across different timelines.

“The workshop examined on-ground issues and generated a range of solutions covering short-, medium and long-term measures,” he said during the council’s full board meeting.

Among the measures put forward, Shahman highlighted the need to expand CCTV coverage and link the system more effectively to the MPS Command Centre.

“Among the key proposals was increasing the number of CCTV cameras and integrating them into the MPS Command Centre to improve monitoring and enforcement,” he said.

Shahman noted that enforcement remains constrained by manpower limitations, especially given the size of the population under MPS’ care.

“There are 700,000 residents in Selayang. Manpower is limited, and we cannot cover all areas in the municipality,” he said.

Meanwhile, the council is currently assessing the feasibility of the proposals before deciding on rollout plans.

“A follow-up meeting will be held next week to finalise the proposals and determine budget requirements for implementation,” Shahman said.

He emphasised that, beyond enforcement, MPS will continue to strengthen public awareness efforts and refine its internal processes to better manage waste-related issues.

Shahman added that complaint numbers rose in the first quarter, partly due to increased waste generation during major festive periods.

“Waste-related complaints surged in the first quarter of the year, driven partly by festive periods such as Thaipusam, Chinese New Year, and Hari Raya (Aidilfitri),” he said.

Upcoming measures will curb illegal dumping and improve overall cleanliness across Selayang.

Data from MPS show that 58 compounds were issued based on CCTV evidence as of March this year, compared with 264 last year and 501 in 2024.

To date, CCTV units have been installed at 12 identified hotspots, including areas in Rawang, Gombak, Batu Caves, and Taman Selayang Jaya.

Meanwhile, Zone 3 councillor Mazlan Musa called on KDEBWM-appointed contractors to enhance coordination with local councillors to ensure smoother operations and more effective service delivery.
