Two held over RM14.7m ganja bust, police cripple international syndicates

SHAH ALAM, April 28 — The police have crippled two international drug trafficking syndicates following the arrest of two women and the seizure of 183.7kg of drugs worth RM14.7 million at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) and in Negeri Sembilan.

Selangor police chief Datuk Shazeli Kahar said the first arrest was made in the Mambau area of Negeri Sembilan by the KLIA Narcotics Criminal Investigation Division on Tuesday (April 21).

The 34-year-old suspect led police to the discovery of 18 sacks containing 239 plastic packages filled with compressed slabs believed to be cannabis buds, weighing 153.7kg and valued at RM12.3 million, at a house in Sendayan, Negeri Sembilan.

“We believe the suspect is among the masterminds of the drug trafficking syndicate. Her urine test turned out negative, and she has no prior record.

“Police also seized a Honda City car worth RM35,000 and a Vmoto XDV 250 motorcycle worth RM15,000,” he said during a media conference today.

In the second case, auxiliary police personnel of Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad at KLIA detained a foreign woman in the airport's vicinity after detecting two suspicious pieces of luggage during a scan on Thursday (April 23).

Further checks on the two bags belonging to the woman uncovered 60 plastic packages containing compressed slabs believed to be cannabis buds weighing 30kg and valued at RM2.4 million. The drugs are believed to be destined for the European market.

“The 24-year-old suspect is single and works as a restaurant assistant in her home country. Initial urine screening found her negative for drugs, and she has no prior record in Malaysia.

“Cash amounting to £280, equivalent to about RM1,500, believed to be linked to the criminal activity, was also seized,” Shazeli said.

Both suspects have been remanded for seven days for investigation under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.
