State outlines bold green transition with hydrogen, EV initiatives

SHAH ALAM, April 28 — Selangor is taking a bold step to develop a hydrogen ecosystem, accelerate electric vehicle (EV) adoption and expand charging infrastructure, with the transition to be carried out through phased projects and industry partnerships to ensure inclusive economic benefits for the people.

State executive councillor for for public health and environment Jamaliah Jamaluddin said the initiatives form part of the Selangor Agenda for Green Economy 2025-2035 (SAGE), which sets a clear direction for the energy sector to become a main driver of economic growth and a new revenue source for the state, while reducing dependence on fossil fuels.

“Overall, efforts to reduce reliance on fossil fuels and strengthen the state’s energy mix are being implemented through an approach that includes increasing clean energy supply, reducing energy demand, and transforming economic structures and energy consumption patterns.

“This includes expanding renewable energy development such as solar and waste-to-energy (WTE), while modernising energy infrastructure and grid systems to support supply stability and enhance energy resilience across the industrial and consumer sectors.

“Additionally, this transition is being reinforced through the phased development of a hydrogen ecosystem, including initiatives towards establishing a hydrogen hub in Batang Kali that supports the entire value chain from production to utilisation, particularly in the industrial and transport sectors,” Jamaliah said at the Selangor State Legislative Assembly sitting here today.

She added that SAGE is a comprehensive plan covering thermal energy, renewable energy, energy efficiency and emerging technologies like hydrogen, with a target of attracting more than RM63 billion in investments by 2035.

Efforts to electrify transport are being strengthened by promoting EV adoption, alongside developing charging infrastructure supported by policies, green financing and workforce skills development, she explained.

“In terms of implementation, the approaches being explored include phased development, engagement with strategic industry partners, and models that open opportunities for local company participation,” Jamaliah said.
