Selangor opposition walks out of assembly after uproar over pig farming

SHAH ALAM, April 27 — State opposition assemblymen staged a walkout after Speaker Lau Weng San ordered Taman Medan’s Dr Afif Bahardin and Kuang’s Mohd Rafiq Mohd Abdullah to leave the Selangor State Legislative Assembly sitting for disrupting the session.

The incident occurred during the wind-up session by state executive councillor for housing and culture Datuk Borhan Aman Shah when Afif interjected over his motion, relating to Seri Kembangan assemblyman Wong Siew Ki’s remarks on pig farming issues, was rejected.

Wong had proposed a modern, closed-system pig-farming model for Selangor, which Afif said goes against Sultan of Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah Alhaj’s order for the state not to host pig-farming activities.

Lau then questioned Afif’s absence during the morning sitting when the former explained the rejection.

Lau instructed Afif to take his seat and allow Borhan to proceed with his wind-up, but Afif refused to comply and questioned the Speaker’s ruling.

After Afif ignored repeated instructions to sit down, Lau ordered the opposition member to escort him out of the assembly.

“Taman Medan (Afif), please leave. You have caused a disturbance for the past 10 minutes and disrupted the assembly. Taman Medan, please leave today, tomorrow and the day after,” said Lau.

Several opposition members, including Kuang assemblyman Rafiq, attempted to intervene in support of Afif.

However, after repeated warnings, Lau issued a similar directive to Kuang.

“Kuang, are you going to sit down or not?” he said after a third warning.

“Kuang is also ordered to leave until tomorrow and the day after,” Lau ordered.

The situation escalated, prompting an uproar among opposition members, including its leader Datuk Seri Azmin Ali, who then led a walkout from the assembly hall.

Borhan was subsequently told to continue his wind-up speech despite the absence of opposition members.

“For members who are not present, there is no need to respond,” said Lau.
