PDRM probes Facebook account owner over insult to Selangor Sultan

KUALA LUMPUR, April 27 — The Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) is investigating the owner or administrator of the Facebook account “Huayan The Pureland Learning Centre” over a post allegedly insulting Sultan of Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah Alhaj.

Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department (CID) director Datuk Kumar Muthuvelu said the Classified Criminal Investigation Unit of the Prosecution/Legal Division (D5) of the Bukit Aman CID, in collaboration with the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), also seized the device used to upload the post on April 25.

“Twenty-one police reports have been received and 21 witnesses, including individuals who lodged the reports, have been called to have their statements recorded to assist in the investigation process,” he said in a statement today.

Kumar said the case is being investigated under Section 4(1) of the Sedition Act 1948, Section 504 of the Penal Code, and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.

He said firm action will be taken against any party that misuses social media for unlawful purposes, especially those involving sensitive 3R (royalty, religion, race) issues.

“Freedom of speech under Article 10 of the Federal Constitution has its limitations. Therefore, the public is advised to always be prudent and responsible when making any statements in public spaces or on social media,” Kumar added.

Yesterday, several Selangor State Executive Council members urged PDRM and MCMC to take firm action over the post that insulted the Sultan.
