UMW Aerospace boosts Selangor industry with Rolls-Royce milestone

RAWANG, April 23 — Selangor’s aerospace industry has received a major boost as UMW Aerospace delivered its first 100 per cent Malaysian-made rear fan case to Rolls-Royce.

According to UMW Aerospace managing director Fariz Hashim, this achievement reflects the state’s growing role in high-precision global manufacturing, and described the milestone as a defining moment for the company and for Malaysia’s aerospace capability.

“Today is a significant moment for UMW Aerospace. We mark the maiden delivery of the 100 per cent Malaysian-made rear fan case to Rolls‑Royce — a clear statement of what has been built here in Serendah, and what we are now capable of delivering at a global level.

“Every fan case we supply to Rolls‑Royce today, including the front fan case, is a product of Malaysian capability, Malaysian talent, and Malaysian excellence.

“We thank Rolls‑Royce for the trust placed in us. We thank the government, both at the national and state level and our partners in the industry for backing the long‑term development of Malaysia’s aerospace capability,” he said during his speech at the UMW Aerospace factory in Serendah here today.

The achievement was commemorated at an event graced by Raja Muda of Selangor Tengku Amir Shah. Also present were Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amiruddin Shari, state executive councillor for investment, trade and mobility Ng Sze Han, and representatives from Rolls-Royce Holdings plc, as well as industry leaders and senior government officials.

Elaborating, Fariz said the rear fan case delivery comes a decade after UMW Aerospace started operating in Serendah, with the ambition of becoming a Tier 1 supplier to Rolls-Royce for its Trent 1000 and Trent 7000 engine programmes.

He said the company delivered its first fan case within two years of starting from a greenfield site and recently marked its 10th anniversary, adding that over the years, the company has expanded its technical capabilities and strengthened its partnership with Rolls-Royce. It was named a high-performing supplier from 2021 to 2025.

He shared that a major milestone was when Rolls-Royce awarded UMW Aerospace the rear fan case programme, parts previously produced in the United States.

According to Fariz, Rolls-Royce awarded UMW Aerospace the rear fan case programme over three years ago as a result of trust built over years of consistent performance, and asserted the programme’s significance in terms of the advanced manufacturing capability required, even though it is a Rolls-Royce design.

“Our 100 per cent Malaysian workforce established the entire production framework from scratch, defining the manufacturing route, developing and qualifying specialised techniques and designing all associated tooling, fixtures and inspection methods — right through to the full approval for serial production.

“To support this, we made a bold investment in advanced chemical milling capability.

“Today, UMW Aerospace is the only company in Malaysia, and possibly in the region, capable of producing large‑scale aerospace components in this way, with the intellectual property wholly owned by UMW Aerospace,” he said.

He added that the achievement reflects broader ecosystem development, including collaboration with local universities, TVET institutions, and suppliers.

“Our people’s work ensures that when a Rolls-Royce engine flies anywhere in the world with a UMW Aerospace fan case, Malaysia flies with it,” Fariz said.
