Selangor pushes deeper reforms to tackle poverty under RS-2

SHAH ALAM, Apr 23 — The Selangor government is continuing to strengthen efforts to address poverty in a comprehensive manner, focusing on improving the quality of life for the people through the implementation of the Second Selangor Plan (RS-2).

Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari said the state succeeded in eradicating extreme poverty in 2024, while recording a decline in the absolute poverty rate to 0.9 per cent, compared with 1.5 per cent in 2022.

“We still need to look more seriously at relative poverty through additional initiatives such as Bingkisan or Bingkas supplements and several other projects.

“For example, in 2022, relative poverty in Selangor stood at 14.2 per cent and has dropped to 8.5 per cent in 2024,” he said.

He said this when officiating the First Selangor Plan (RS-1) Showcase at the Selangor State Legislative Assembly here yesterday.

In the same development, Amirudin said the target for the absolute poverty rate in 2025 is 0.7 per cent, although official data has yet to be obtained from the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM).

He said RS-2 will focus on employment policies, reassessing the effectiveness of welfare assistance, as well as implementing a more active exit policy.

“Therefore, there is a need to improve the service system and the quality of life of the people,” he said.
